Hip-Hop's Rituals and Stereotypes

Rituals and Stereotypes
Assignment 1-3-3

Every year television station host award shows for hip-hop as a ritual to give honor for all the contributions they've made in the hip-hop culture. Hip-hop wouldn't be hip-hop with out award show rituals. It is customary to pay tribute to legends in the hip-hop culture to pay homage to those who pave the way for laying the foundation of hip-hop. Also ritualistic in hip-hop is for rappers to compete in rap battles to prove their skills. BET's 106&Park sets the stage for up and coming rappers to compete in free style friday. Free style Friday set-up a plat-form for rap battles to be birthed

MsPeaches_final1.jpgStereotypes in the Hip-hop Culture

Since the emergence of hip-hop the environment has created a culture that has its own uniqueness. Hip-hop has portrayed a lifestyle, music, artist, and their communities in great depth. With the cultures uniqueness came some secular perspectives of hip-hop, some negative and some positive. Here are some of the stereotypes associated with hip-hop:

  • All hip-hop rappers are gang members
  • Hip-hop music has a gangster identity
  • They sell drugs and rob people of their money
  • They dropped out of school
  • They all about something never did
  • They all sag their pants and wear baggy clothes
  • Rappers are black people
  • Hip-hop started in the ghetto or projects
  • If your into hiphop your acting black
  • Rappers are rude, ignorant, and naughty
Like the pictures shown around America had created negative portraits of the black community and woman. With hip-hop artist's lyrics and music video that degrade woman, praise violence, highlight poor neighborhoods, and contain drug usage they contribute ongoing stereotypes placed upon the hip-hop culture.

Hip-Hop's Popular Myths and Beliefs

Popular myths and beliefs surrounded in the
Hip-Hop culture
hip-hop-hope.jpg
Assignment 1-3-2

Since the emergence of the hip-hop culturet there's been different myths and beliefs believed to be associated with it. The hip-hop culture uniqueness stirred controversies in america leading any to develop their own allegories and assumptions about the culture. Not only did the america form these myths but the people apart of hip-hop culture did as well.

Over time myths and beliefs have been embedded into the minds in society to think:
  • Tupac is really dead he's living some where on an island
  • P-diddy set up Biggie- smalls to be killed
  • Aaliyah was killed as a blood sacrifice
  • Kanye West planned to dis taylor swift at the awards
  • Hip-hop members are in the illuminati
  • Hip-hop is black culture
  • On BET,VH1, and MTV support the hip-hop culture
Rappers and hip-hop figures have supported some of these myths implicitly and explicitly. For example, Tupac rapped about dying and that he was going to fake his death, and as soon as he died the myth he was still alive was born. Tupac implicitly and explicitly supported this myth by his actions and song lyrics. Some myths have stirred world controversies, in another example the myth that hip-hop members are in the illuminati. The hand signs, the constant reference to the illuminati in song lyrics, and performance connotations have hyped the myth, and no ones denying it.

Nicki Minaj Pink Friday Album Dropped November 2010

Barbie's in Hip-Hop

Pop culture originally known as popular culture, can be defined as attitudes, trends, morals, opinions, and social influences in modern day and sometimes past living, according to me. Pop culture is ever changing to commercial of businesses for the purpose of consumption. Products, brands, and advertisements are created and modified to fit the current demand of modern day living. Article Base stated,
"It is also a term used to describe current cultural trends, and cultural trends of the past that have achieved enduring status, (2008)."
What's new, what's hot, and what's popular, all shape the status of pop culture. It is most important for businesses to understand the nature of pop culture to specifically development efficicent services or goods for consumers.

Barbie has for years molded little girls understandings of what dolls should like, what your body figure is "supposed" to be, what kind of boyfriend (ken) to have, and even what kind of car you should have. As Nicki Minaj debuted her Barbie themed album Pink Friday, the image of Barbie had been reinvented. Barbie had gone Hip-Hop and now not only were young girls mocking this Barbie, but adult women were too. Nicki Minaj had created a phenomenom with her Barbie image. Everyone wanted to be like Nicki Minaj, and moreover have everything Barbie.

Business everywhere capitalized on the craze and had everything out from Barbie chains, paraphernalia, and the Barbie company mocked a doll after the Hip-Hop artist. Other artist hooked on to Hip-Hop Barbie faddism, trying to be the next new Barbie.
