Hip-Hop's Rituals and Stereotypes

Rituals and Stereotypes
Assignment 1-3-3

Every year television station host award shows for hip-hop as a ritual to give honor for all the contributions they've made in the hip-hop culture. Hip-hop wouldn't be hip-hop with out award show rituals. It is customary to pay tribute to legends in the hip-hop culture to pay homage to those who pave the way for laying the foundation of hip-hop. Also ritualistic in hip-hop is for rappers to compete in rap battles to prove their skills. BET's 106&Park sets the stage for up and coming rappers to compete in free style friday. Free style Friday set-up a plat-form for rap battles to be birthed

MsPeaches_final1.jpgStereotypes in the Hip-hop Culture

Since the emergence of hip-hop the environment has created a culture that has its own uniqueness. Hip-hop has portrayed a lifestyle, music, artist, and their communities in great depth. With the cultures uniqueness came some secular perspectives of hip-hop, some negative and some positive. Here are some of the stereotypes associated with hip-hop:

  • All hip-hop rappers are gang members
  • Hip-hop music has a gangster identity
  • They sell drugs and rob people of their money
  • They dropped out of school
  • They all about something never did
  • They all sag their pants and wear baggy clothes
  • Rappers are black people
  • Hip-hop started in the ghetto or projects
  • If your into hiphop your acting black
  • Rappers are rude, ignorant, and naughty
Like the pictures shown around America had created negative portraits of the black community and woman. With hip-hop artist's lyrics and music video that degrade woman, praise violence, highlight poor neighborhoods, and contain drug usage they contribute ongoing stereotypes placed upon the hip-hop culture.
